When an a.c. voltage, V = 10 sin wt is applied to a circuit consisting a 100 ohms resistor, a 100 mH inductor and a 0.1F capacitor connected in series, what is the magnitude and phase shift of the current? ( frequency = 50 Hz., w = angular frequency).

With L = 0.1 H, C = 0.1 F and ω = 100π rad/s Impedance of the whole circuit = square root of √[102 + (ωL - 1/ωC)2] Ω = √[100 + (10π - 1/(10π))2] = 32.9 Ω Hence magnitude of the current = 10/32.9 = 0.304 A Phase shift of the current = tan-1 [(ωL - 1/ωC)/10] = tan-1 [π - 1/(100π)] = 72.3 deg. with the current lagging the voltage.
